HOME ADDITION/REMODEL—Week 17

Things have kicked into overdrive once again here at the house. Since Monday, post vacation, it has really been crazy. We started the week with no less than 3 crews here at once, ALL MAKING LOUD NOISE and driving me a bit crazy, but all in the name of good progress, which I have had to remind myself of each day.

Monday and Tuesday had the flooring guys out here installing all the Red Oak hardwoods downstairs and the Pine upstairs, and we also had sheetrock guys in and out doing sanding and mud work. Kristi and I also started to prime the new space with our friends Allison and Rebecca. We got the bonus room and it’s small closets done Monday night, along with the new back wall in the extended TX Room. After our fabulous help left, Kristi and I worked late priming the powder room and dining room area. On Tuesday night Kristi and I continued to prime, and knocked out her office, the laundry room, and a ton of crown moulding, as well as a little pantry area that is an extension of what takes you to the basement now. Trim carpenters returned and hung doors upstairs in the bonus room, and in Kristi’s office closet. They also did more trim work and worked on the pocket doors quite a bit. We are using 2 old doors from the house that we have saved for 9 years as our pocket doors separating the powder and laundry rooms from the dining room. Challenges abound with that, but we are pressing on and making it happen.

Wednesday saw the world’s greatest framing crew return to build us our deck, which we are thrilled about. We also made a ton of decisions about color and began applying paint around all the areas that the trim carpenters will be putting trim over on Thursday, so we can save ourselves HOURS of tedious cutting in time with the brushes when it comes time to really paint the walls. All the crown moulding is primed and ready for caulk work now.

Thursday saw the deck being completed, as well as the sheetrock crew coming back to fix more areas we highlighted on the walls the past day or so. Trim carpenters returned to do more trim and case work and the installation of our final old door, the one I have been stripping on and off for 3 months, which is Kristi’s office door. I also started caulking the crown to get it ready for paint.

On Friday, the trim carpenters returned, and this time, had their dogs with them. They train and show Australian Shepherds and specialize in Agility competitions with their dogs, so Kristi and I took several “puppy breaks” to help the sanity. Our amazing framers came back to start putting our privacy fence back up that has been done since day 1 of construction, so that was a welcome treat. Hopefully the port-o-potty that was in our back yard will not be abused by passersby in the alley where it now resides. Sheetrock guys came back yet again to do a bit of sanding and mud work. That is close to being done, but around all this—mainly at night—Kristi and I started applying paint to the walls in the areas where trim was going, so we would not have to cut in around all that when the time came to do so.

So—it was an insane week, but a ton of work got done, and we are nearing the end of construction. Tune in next weekend when you can see paint on the walls, and who knows what else! Until then, go here to check out the latest shots from this week.
