Friday Foto #71

Welcome back to the Friday Foto, a “weekly” feature here, when there is material for it, which has not been the case lately since I had surgery recently and have been off the blog grid. Now, hopefully some things of interest will be coming in to get back into the swing of regular posting. Am I just saying this to myself?

The image above is an interior shot of an architectural icon in our fair city—The Downtown Presbyterian Church. We were here recently for the commencement of Watkins College of Art, Design & Film graduates, in particular our niece, Melanie Clay. We are so proud of her accomplishment and look forward to what lies ahead for her as she starts her career, either in photography (her major) or continuing on to grad school to do a masters in art therapy. Or, perhaps some other plan not yet conceived. Regardless of her future, we believe it will be bright.

We have been in the church building where her commencement took place, but never in the sanctuary, so on the way out after everyone else had emptied the room, I snuck back in for a quick shot, to capture a most historic room where people have been gathering to worship since the 1800’s. Feel free to explore the history of the church at the link above, or if you ever get a chance, attend a worship service there. It really is a neat place, and there are lots of other services and programs that they offer that you can also find out about on their site.

Buildings and churches are not built to look this way anymore, and ones like Downtown Pres are a continual gift to our city, both in spiritual and architectural significance. And in a downtown area where modern hi-rise condos, hotels, arenas and a whopping new convention center is being built, it is still nice to know that we have some old gems like this to look upon, worship within and appreciate.

Glad to see you back on the blog grid! You have at least one reader (ha!). Thanks for posting this photo. I've not been in that church and it is beautiful! I'll have to look for an opportunity to go there sometime.
