This week was mainly framing—and started off with doing the decking for the 2nd floor area, and then doing the roof for the large new dormer that we will have upstairs, along with some demo work on the old shed dormer. We thought that sucker would away this week, but the rain messed us up on that, so the guys worked as much as they could each day trying to get work done, but also weather(WATER)proof the space. That proved to be quite the challenge given the rain.
Wednesday morning first thing at 7:00 the phone woke us up (while it was raining) and I was asked to go move my car because the dumpster guy was waiting on me so he could load up and haul off our dumpster. I was going to video that but at 7:00 a.m., I could barely stand up straight, let alone hold a camera still. More framing upstairs took place, along with several meetings about design decisions on storage areas and built in bookcases for the bonus room. Late Wednesday night the torrential rains hit, and we were once again sweeping water off of the decking, only this time, it was both of us, and we swept until 3:00 a.m. at which time it had calmed down some, and we went to bed. Wet and exhausted.
Thursday was all about waterproofing the space given the insanity of the night before, so even more tarps, wraps and who knows what else was brought in to help us along with guys sweeping water off the decking on both floors for HOURS. The rain just didn’t want to stop. More demo occured on the old shed dormer but the plans to remove it this week have been shelved due to the weather. Our lead framer, Mike, brought “Doc” one of his crew, over to our house about 4:00 pm and he stayed at our house maintaining the floors of the new space and sweeping water out until around 7:30 that night. I had an opportunity to talk with Doc for a while, and just hang on for that post, because this man has quite a story to his life.
Friday was rocking all day here with a full crew at 7:00 a.m., banging hammers all day, helping to control dampness again, but also doing all kinds of work on the outside gables, as well as finishing the demo on the dormer, at least all they can do before literally removing it. Just studs and sheetrock holding that thing on now. We expect that dormer to go away soon next week if weather permits a dry enough window for that to happen. We’ll just wait and see what we get for weather and go from there.
Until next week, go here and see the photos from this week.
