October 30, 2009 was our 10th Anniversary. We decided that for #10, we would forego the usual camping trip at a state park, and step it up a notch. Since neither of us had ever been to Moab, Utah, we decided we would go there, and enjoy an anniversary a little different than the usual. One where we had a solid roof over our heads due to sleeping indoors. We started making plans in late summer and booked a room at the Apache Motel, which is famous (as long as they can ride this one out) because John Wayne stayed there back in his movie making days. We also ordered lots of brochures on what to do in Moab and places to eat etc., so we could have some things organized in advance of our trip.
We flew into Grand Junction, CO and rented a car for the drive to Moab, and we took the scenic route, which you will see in the beginning of the first set of photos listed below. We got checked into the Apache Motel, unpacked and then went out for dinner that evening at the Slickrock Cafe. The next day, we started hitting the big local attraction, Arches National Park, which is LOADED with all kinds of amazing and historic arches that have been around for millions of years. As one of the park rangers told us on a guided trip one day, “this entire place is the product of erosion.” I agree.
Between that and Canyonlands National Park, about 45 minutes away, they occupied the majority of most of our days. There was so much to see and hike to in those 2 parks, that we just kept going back again and again because we really fell in love with them and had a blast each day, hiking and/or driving to each attraction in the parks. We also had some amazing food while there, and loved eating out at The Love Muffin, Wake and Bake, Moab Diner, Moab Brewery, Eddie McStiff’s, The Broken Oar, and last but certainly not least, our favorite place of all, Miguel’s, where we had our official 10 anniversary dinner, and were treated to free margaritas by two perfect strangers sitting at the next table, who overheard us talking to the waiter/owner about it being our anniversary. We also got free dessert that night as well due to the owners generosity.
Along the way, we also checked out a few other state parks with amazing scenery, local bookstores, music stores, bike shops and did a whole lot of walking around charming Moab, which is little more than the main strip running right through the middle of town. There are about 6-7 blocks of each side off of Main St. (of course) for businesses and most residential. It is a quiet town until the tourists come in, and then it is rocking. Thankfully, we hit it in between two very big events, so there were not tons of tourists.
So why wait this long to post about a trip that took place 13 months ago? Well, account for 7 months of no activity on the blog and it just took a while to go through the photos before they were ready to put onto flickr and be available for viewing. The load times alone took HOURS on several occasions to get them up there. I have not even edited them out, or made captions, because we may be celebrating our 15th anniversary by the time that’s done. In the meantime,
here are the links to our photos. Put on a cup of coffee and call in sick to work if you want to see all of them. There are over 900 to view from all the groups. We could talk your head off about how much we loved our time there and would recommend Moab to anyone interested in an area filled with fun outdoors stuff to do. We hope to go back again some day and take Kristi’s dad, or just go alone like we did this time. Perhaps for another anniversary, or for some other occasion.
Enjoy the picts, and thanks for your time in checking them out!
