Friday Foto #59

Welcome to Moab, Utah, and the Delicate Arch for this week’s Friday Foto. This arch is one of, if not the most popular arch in all of Arches National Park. This was one of the must see attractions for us while we were in Moab for our 10th anniversary trip.

Not only is Delicate Arch so popular in terms of its shape and size, but it is also extremely popular for moments like you see above—beautiful sunset shots, in the way the sun lights up the whole right side of the arch when it drops. To get to this point, you have a strenuous hike of about 45 minutes, and at times, you wonder if it is worth it, because you cannot see the arch until the very end. But once you see it, you immediately know it is worth it and more. On this day we got there about an hour early before prime sunset time, so we could get some shots of it and just enjoy the heat of the day while it lasted, which wasn’t long. There were dozens of photographers already there in their spot, waiting on this very moment—to capture some amazing sunset shots of the arch. This day didn’t disappoint anyone! BEAUTIFUL!

While we were there killing time for the sun to be just right, we took LOTS of other photos—probably 30, of just the arch here in different sizes and angles, as well as me laying down on the ground beneath the arch and shooting straight up at the arch above, and us getting our photo taken under it by a nice couple we met from Salt Lake City, Utah. On another day, we went on a much shorter hike to see the arch, but from the opposite side at Wolfe Ranch, and if you ever want to see those shots, go check out the links to our photos from this post.

As is most of Arches National Park, this beauty is the product of erosion, which is hard to imagine in a way, but history proves the story and this Entrada Sandstone will collapse at some point in time. Recent years have already seen some arches in the park collapse, the most recent being in August of 2008, and we got to see the location where it used to be as well while on our trip. If we never get back to Delicate Arch, we will be grateful for our time there and will have our memories and photos to enjoy of a most special place, on a most special trip.
